The Settle & Carlisle Railway is the most popular main line steam route in Britain. Running 72 miles from Settle Junction to Carlisle, it features some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. The north and southbound climbs to Ais Gill summit, on a ruling grade of 1 in 100, provided locomotive crews with one of the greatest challenges of the steam age. In the steam preservation era, the story has continued with the 'Cumbrian Mountain Express'.
1988 to 1994 was the climax of S&C steam operation and the variety of locomotives that ran over the line in that period will surely never be seen again.
The programme consists of scenic lineside action and also includes spectacular on-train footage when the fells were covered in snow. It is in two parts covering the north and southbound runs in detail.
